Mornings for 'Me'
I find that starting my morning "for me" rather than "for others" is a healthy and helpful way to prepare my mind and body for tackling the stressors of the day ahead.
One simple but helpful way is to avoid immediately checking my email or phone once I wake up.
I try to have at least 15-30 minutes to "just be". I do this by:
- Making coffee
- Opening a window to take in some fresh air
- Listening to my favorite music
By deferring emails and social media in the morning and giving myself some space to be present with my own thoughts, I am showing myself respect and gratitude. For those first 15-30 minutes of the day, I try to start my day for me and not others.
Another tip that I have found extremely helpful is mindful showering by experiencing water rather than simply feeling it. When we take a shower (or bath for tub folks), of course we feel the water that splashes on us from the faucet. However, focusing on how the water touches us can be a very calming and mindful way to center ourselves during a normal routine.
- Is the water warm or cold?
- How does our body experience the water?
- Do we get goosebumps?
- Does the water feel different when it hits your face versus your arms and hands?
Prioritizing ourselves first thing in the morning, even for a few minutes, we self-confirm that our wellbeing, health, and minds matter. Once I pay respect to myself in the morning, I find I'm better equipped to tackle the tasks of my day with an improved sense of inner peace and centeredness.
