National Hispanic Heritage Month 2024

This Tuesday Tip is brought to you by CHE’s DEIB Committee.

National Hispanic Heritage Month is observed annually from September 15th to October 15th. It is a time in which we highlight the rich culture, heritage and contributions of Hispanic Americans. In previous NHHM Tuesday Tips, we have spotlighted its origins, elements of Hispanic/Latino culture (music, food, language), and even a personal experience shared by our own Vanezza Rosas (HR).

This year, I’d like to bring attention to some Hispanic Americans with HUGE contributions/service to our Nation.

Honorable Sonia Sotomayor.
A Yale Law School graduate who has received recognitions in her academic and professional career. She is the First Latina to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States (2009).

Franklin R. Chang-Diaz.
In 1980 became the first Hispanic-American in space. He flew in space 7 times with visits to the Russian Space Station and International Space Station!

The U.S. Army’s 65th Infantry Regiment or Borinqueneers as they are known, is the only all Hispanic Unit in the Army. They have served in WWI, WWII, and the Korean War. In 2014, President Obama awarded them the Congressional Gold Medal.According to the United States House of Representatives, other recognitions received by the regimen included: “one Medal of Honor, nine Distinguished Service Crosses, approximately 250 Silver Stars, more than 600 Bronze Stars, and more than 2,700 Purple Hearts”.

Dr. Martha Bernal.
First woman of Mexican descent to obtain a doctoral degree in psychology in the United States. Early advocate for Multicultural Psychology. Assessed and treated children with behavioral issues.

Naturally, the contributions are endless. For more Hispanic Heritage Month resources, including amazing stories, please visit Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Latino.
